RECIPE: butternut squash soup

This is such an incredible raw soup. Raw soups are not really my thing and sometimes are hard to digest but THIS soup is magical. It's tasty, it's light, it's filling, AND it tastes soooo good. Also, it takes about 5 minutes to make ...

for the soup:
the recipe
1.5 Cups of raw chunks of butternut squash, peeled and seeded.
3 Cups of orange juice (fresh)
1 Cup of mango
1/2 Teaspoon of Nutmeg or Cinnamon


garnish
Banana slices or mango cubes
Cinnamon

In a high speed blender place all the soup ingredients, and slowly increase the speed, this is to to prevent too much foam on top. Allow ingredients to fully mix. Serve and garnish with the rest of the ingredients.

So easy and simple.

Move that money maker!



Whoever said exercise was a bad thing? And whoever said you had to be a professional athlete in order to get adequate exercise? Simply moving--as in shaking that money maker--for 40 minutes can actually increase your brain size (and naturally, your brain power) as well as make you look and feel fabulous. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign studied an already studied quick-fix to all things maladaptive: exercise. This time the study focused on exercise and aging adults. No surprise here...exercise is fabYOUlous and it can also help our bodies survive on Earth how God intended it to.

Get a moooove on!

In the meantime, maybe you can get your brain juices flowing by trying out some (simple) exercise. I promise, that's all it takes. I'm not promising you will look like Gisele Bundchen, but getting that crimson liquid running through your veins faster than the sloth-like pace that it's accustomed to can make all the difference in your daily threshold.



Yoga
MmmMMmmmmMm my favorite. Get those juices flowing and you'll be surprised what else starts flowing.

Shopping
Amen, sister. Walking around in circles will get that blood pumping. And I can guarantee the Semi Annual Sale will get your blood flowing, not to mention the likelihood that you will spend more than 40 minutes in this activity.

Farmer's Market
My Sunday walks are probably my favorite part of California. I get to wake up every lazy Sunday and walk to the local Farmer's Market. I take my time and meander through the stands and smell the different and exotic smells. This is my time and I don't let anyone interrupt me. I'm exercising my sluggish legs as well as my stifled soul.

Hike
When was the last time you went for a hike? Okay, so the Sierra Nevada's aren't on everyone's doorstep, but an outdoor walk--non-concrete-pounding--is probably more physical than your romantic relationship you've developed with your fancy computer.


Stairs
Even when I was prime (okay, more prepared than less so) for my marathon I would still get winded taking the stairs. So master those stairs, pretty lady, because that brain isn't the only thing that will get juicy.

Clean House 
Aside from my unnaturally clean boyfriend, most small spaces, and even large ones, could use a good once over. And my once-overs are the works: vacuum, mop, dust, laundry, dishes, windows, mirrors, linens...okay, I'm not that disgusting, but 40 minutes in and I'm feelin' good.

GET MOVING, WOMAN!

What I'm reading, now

As a graduate student I certainly have plenty of assigned readings piled up on my desk but every once in awhile I like to read something a little more satisfying. My internal nerd (or maybe my nerd-self is completely visible) compels me to explore Buddhism. I once took a World Religions class and though I cannot recite almost anything I learned, I can say that ever since then I've felt this magnetic pull toward Buddhism. I don't know what this pull is (maybe it's the freedom of exploration and understanding) but I figured I'd start acknowledging this pull by satisfying my craving. As per the recommendation of one Dr. Ann Berliner I've checked out What the Buddha Taught at my local library. Aside from my textbook reading--and all of my other duties I should be attending to--I've devoured the first pages of this book. With a little self-restraint I've been reading it chapter by chapter.


So far I've found that there's an incredible amount of satisfaction found in following your yearnings. I don't know where this will take me because I rarely can predict the future, but I do know that having the space and freedom to indulge my curiosity has had the most profound effect on me in the venue of peace. Maybe it's the Buddha's no-nonsense approach to life, or maybe it's the satisfaction found in self-indulgence, but I find myself a lot more content and peaceful when I allow myself this freedom. Self-growth is essential in fully living and growth cannot happen without a little sunshine, water, and fresh air! Give yourself some space let that inner whoa-man shine!
