What does this mean? First of all, it's a complete protein, moreso than the rice-and-beans combo and even moreso than meat (yup! it's true!). The neatest thing about this green goodie is that it is low calorie and also packed with many other nutrients that rice and meat leave out. Also, it doesn't harm your health like rice and meat do.
Spirulina contains all B vitamins, vitamin D, vitamin K, vitamin E, calcium, chromium, copper, iodine, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc. It provides an excellent omega fat content that is especially helpful in brain and tissue development. It provides beneficial flora to the gut which in turn boosts your immune system (you know I haven't been sick in a year and a half?? and only 2 times since going raw??).
My favorite part about it is that it provides a good source of iodine. Iodine is extremely important for women and most women (especially the mamas) are deficient. Iodine is found in a lot of fish sources because they feed off the algae in the water. If you do not eat fish then go straight to the source and eat the algae!
Iodine helps regulate the thyroid and this is like the keeper of your bodily functions. A healthy thyroid means a healthy metabolism and mood. And this is absolutely necessary for your best life, possible.
You know what's especially neat about this little algae? It gives you just as much protein and iron as a big steak without the ill effects such as excessive cholesterol, saturated fat, weight gain, hormones, antibiotics, indigestion, and heart disease ... whoa.
It's a powerhouse.
Not only that, but it is loaded with antioxidants. So not only does it not cause harm but it actually feeds you and combats harm. This stuff is the coolest!
Lastly, it serves as a sort of anti-inflammatory food with its GLA content. GLA stands for Gamma-Linolenic Acid and is an incredible essential fatty acid that is necessary for beautiful hair, skin, and nails.
Okay okay ... this is how I ate it this week:
Simple Spirulina Dressing:
juice from 1/2 lemon
1 T coconut nectar
1 t spirulina
Combine everything in a small bowl and whisk until incorporated. That's it! So simple and delicious!
I tossed this with a basic salad with some strawberries and dried fig. It was incredibly delicious.. Though be warned that food combining is extremely important. Combining dried figs and the fat in avocados could lead to some uncomfortable indigestion ...
